Anthony Gilchrist MA, MSc, RPA

I have lived near Lake Winnipesaukee for the majority of my life and have always been interested in the shipwrecks within it. In 2017, I graduated from Plymouth State University with a major in history and completed my final paper on research I had conducted about steamboats on Lake Winnipesaukee. While at Plymouth State, I met Dr. David Starbuck, who made me interested in archaeology. I then obtained a master’s in Applied Archaeology (2019) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master of science degree in Maritime Archeology (2021) from the University of Southampton. I conducted archaeological surveys of shipwrecks in Lake Winnipesaukee for both of these programs. This website is my way of sharing the valuable information I have gathered about the shipwrecks over my five-plus years of research.

Disclaimer

This website is for informational purposes only. What you choose to use this information for is up to you. If you decide to dive any of these shipwrecks your safety is your own responsibility!!!!! If you decide to dive any of these shipwrecks, please consider this advice! Diving is an inherently dangerous activity! Make sure you are certified to dive these wrecks. Never dive alone or outside of your certifications/limits!!! Past the thermocline in the lake, it is very cold year-round and can get very dark very quickly as one descends. Some parts of the lake are incredibly silty, with almost no visibility. Lastly, boats constitute a significant hazard; don’t assume other boats know what your dive flag means. You should always have someone watching your boat topside! Please use caution if you decide to dive. People have died diving in the lake, so don’t become one of them.
